Abstract

This study investigated the impact of Acceptance and Commitment Group Therapy (ACGT) on depression and psychological flexibility in undergraduates whose significant others experienced depression. Whether attending ACGT would help increase psychological flexibility and decrease depressive symptoms was examined. A total of 25 undergraduates participated in the current study, with 8 assigned to the control group based on convenience and 17 to the intervention group. Those in the intervention group participated in six 2.5-hour on-site ACGT sessions, with data on depression and psychological flexibility being collected at pre-test, post-test, and 10-week follow-up. Results indicated that after the intervention, participants in the ACGT group showed a significant decrease in depressive symptoms and a significant increase in psychological flexibility. Significant differences were also found between the ACGT and control groups for depression at post-test, with those in the intervention group reporting lower depression, but there was no significant difference at follow-up. However, these differences were not significant for psychological flexibility. Altogether, the findings suggest ACGT was promising in reducing depression and enhancing psychological flexibility in undergraduates with a significant other experiencing depression.
