Abstract

Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) often have difficulties in communication, including expressive and receptive language, social interaction, and nonverbal communication. Music therapy has been found to enhance communicative development in this population. This scoping review aims to summarise music therapy interventions documented in clinical studies that target the improvement of communication skills in children with ASD, and to identify the specific techniques used to address communication-related subskills. A systematic search was conducted across 5 databases and 10 peer-reviewed publications. According to inclusion criteria, fourteen studies published between 2011 and 2025 were included. The data extracted include music therapy methods, intervention characteristics, and targeted communication subskills. The review found that improvisational and re-creative methods were most commonly used method which included singing, instrument play, rhythmic movement, musical storytelling, and turn-taking activities. These interventions addressed communication subskills such as expressive language, receptive language, joint attention, nonverbal and preverbal communication, pragmatic communication, and emotional expression. This review summarised a variety of music therapy interventions and methods developed to promote communication skills. There are some gaps such as the lack of representation of nonverbal or minimally verbal children and long-term follow-up data. Future research should aim for standardised protocols, clearer therapeutic goals, and inclusive designs that reflect the diverse needs of children with ASD.
