Abstract
งานวิจัยเรื่องกรรมวิธีการผลิตซออู้ของครูอวรัช ชลวาสิน มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อศึกษามูลบทที่เกี่ยวข้องกับประวัติการสร้างซออู้ ศึกษาประวัติครูอวรัช ชลวาสิน ศึกษากรรมวิธีการผลิตซออู้และปัจจัยที่มีผลต่อคุณภาพเสียงซออู้ โดยใช้ระเบียบวิธีวิจัยเชิงคุณภาพ ผลการวิจัยพบว่า ครูอวรัช ชลวาสินได้ทดลองประดิษฐ์ซอด้วงคันแรกตั้งแต่อายุ 12 ปี หลังจากนั้นจึงเริ่มสั่งสมความรู้ด้านดนตรีไทย งานศิลปกรรม ความรู้ด้านวิศวกรรมตลอดมาและได้เปิดโรงงานผลิตเครื่องดนตรีไทยชื่อว่า โรงงานสายเอก จนกระทั่งประสบความสำเร็จ โดยเฉพาะซออู้ ไม้ที่ใช้ผลิตซออู้ของครูอวรัช มีทั้งหมด 9 ชนิด คือ ไม้ชิงชัน ไม้พยุง ไม้สาธร ไม้แก้ว ไม้ดำดง ไม้มะริด ไม้มะเกลือ ไม้พญางิ้วดำ และไม้ Snakewood การผลิตซออู้มีวัสดุอุปกรณ์ทั้งหมด 16 ประเภท กรรมวิธีการผลิตซออู้มี 8 ขั้นตอน ได้แก่ 1. การคัดเลือกกะลาและการแกะสลักลาย 2. การขึ้นหน้าซอ 3. การกลึงคันทวนลูกบิดและคันชัก 4. การเจาะคันทวนประกอบลูกบิด 5. การขึ้นหางม้า 6. การปรับบัวเข้ากะโหลก 7. การทำสี 8. การประกอบซอและปรับแต่งเสียง ลักษณะเฉพาะที่ปรากฏในการผลิตซออู้ของครูอวรัช คือ โครงสร้างยึดตามแบบกระสวนดุริยบรรณ หนังสำหรับขึ้นหน้าซออู้ การผูกลายแกะแบบทับซ้อน มุมมีดในการแกะที่ใช้พรางตาและก่อให้เกิดมิติ การคำนวณช่องลมในการผูกลาย การออกแบบลายเฉพาะของแต่ละคัน การเดินเส้นไม้พุดรอบขอบหนัง และการประยุกต์ใช้เครื่องมือบนพื้นฐานความรู้ทางด้านวิศวกรรมศาสตร์ ปัจจัยที่มีผลต่อคุณภาพเสียงซออู้มี 9 ปัจจัย ได้แก่ 1. การคัดเลือกขนาดกะโหลก 2. การออกแบบลายแกะและรูระบายเสียง 3. การพอกและฝนขอบปากกะโหลก 4. การใช้หนังธรรมชาติ 5. การปรับแต่งหมอนซอ 6. การเลือกสายซอ 7. การพันรัดอก 8. น้ำหนัก ขนาดและความตึงของคันชัก และ 9. ความรู้ด้านดนตรีไทย

This study investigates the life of Khru Avarach Cholvasin, and attempts to analyze process of making saw-u as well as the factors affecting the quality of saw-u timbre and the tone quality show that Khru Avarach Cholvasin began to make the first saw-duang when he was twelve years old. After that he gradually acquired related knowledge from visual arts to Thai classical music and engineering, which culminated in the founding of a successful Thai classical music instruments factory titled “Sai Ek Factory.” Saw-u from this factory has been well-recognized by Thai classical musicians. Khru Avarach uses one out of nine different types of wood to make a saw-u: two types of rosewood (chingchan and phayung), sathon wood, orange jasmine, three types of ebony wood (damdong, makluea, and phayangiwdam), butter fruit wood, and snakewood. There are sixteen components in making a saw-u, with eights steps of making: selecting coconut shell and carving, covering the coconut opening with leather, woodturning tuning pegs and bow, drilling the body and assembling tuning pegs; adjust the bow trimming out the bottom of the wooden body to fit with the coconut shell’s top surface; painting and coating; assembling and finetuning sound qualities. The key characteristics found in the saw-u made by Khru Avarach include: 1. reserving the Duriyaban pattern; 2. use of natural animal hide; 3. using specific angles of the carving blade to create a three-dimension illusion; 4. calculation of ventilation; 5. designing a unique pattern for each saw-u; 6. lining of a softer mai put wood along the covering leather; 7. applying the equipments based on fundamental knowledge of engineering. There are 9 factors affecting the sound quality, namely the 1. selection of coconut shell size; 2. carved pattern design and sound vents; 3. masking and covering on the edge of the coconut shell; 4. use of natural leather; 5. bridge customization; 6. selection of fiddle strings; 7. methods of stringing around the body; 8. weight, size and tension of a bow; and 9. knowledge of Traditional Thai music.
