Abstract

Stroke rehabilitation focuses more on restoring function and physical ability and often overlooks the prevalence of psychological symptoms. The prevalence of depression after stroke has been reported to be between 25 and 79 percent. In addition to depression, anxiety, fatigue and apathy are common symptoms after stroke, with a significant overlap in prevalence and symptoms. Music interventions have been reported to evoke and support emotional processes and facilitate engagement in physical movement, making them valuable for stroke rehabilitation. Many studies have investigated the effects of music interventions on negative emotions in stroke patients, but there is still a need for a comprehensive review of the field to describe in detail the characteristics and scope of research on music interventions for emotional distress in stroke patients, and to analyze the intervention methods, outcomes, etc. of the different studies in the field, in order to provide the best reference for future research and practice. For this review, the researcher conducted an online search of four electronic databases and a manual search of selected music therapy journals. A total of 11 studies met the inclusion criteria and were selected for analysis. The studies were published between 2010 and 2023 and were conducted in different regions. The studies used a variety of music intervention approaches, with a greater use of the receptive approach. All trials focused on stroke patients, and the main aim of the treatment was to reduce patients' emotional distress, anxiety, depression and improve mood. In summary, this review summarized the current body of research and highlights specific aspects of music interventions for addressing emotional distress among stroke patients. Recommendations for future research are made to address gaps in the field and improve the comprehensiveness of research.
