Abstract

Purpose: This research aimed to study Thai traditional therapy’s effect in reducing hypertension in prehypertension patients. Design/Methodology/Approach: A quasi-experimental research was conducted on 83 prehypertension patients. Participants were chosen purposively into four groups with different interventions: Yahom formulation (YH) 1, YH2, Thai massage (TM), and control group (CG) with health-care advices. YH1 and YH2 were administered in doses of 2 capsules (500 mg each) 3 times daily before meals for 4 weeks. The intervention period of TM was 60 min/time of once weekly. For CG, participants were advised on life behavior modifications. The tools used consisted of the experimental data record form, including systolic blood pressure (SBP), diastolic blood pressure (DBP), the perceived stress scale (PSS), the fatigue severity scale (FSS) at weeks 0, 2, 4, 6, 8 and blood chemistry test at weeks 0, 4. Findings: The results showed that SBP and DBP had the statistically significant level of 0.05. YH1, YH2, TM, and CG could reduce SBP after treat in 2 weeks and still continues until after give intervention in 4 weeks (follow-up 2). YH1 and YH2 were able to temporarily decreased DBP in 2 weeks, after that the values undifferent from baseline. TM could reduce DBP in 2 weeks, which also had a long-lasting effect until 4 weeks after treatment. While CG was unable to reduce the DBP. YH2 significantly reduces PSS after treatment in 2 and 4 weeks. Furthermore, YH1 and TM reduced FSS, YH1 also potent in 2 weeks and continued until after 4 weeks of treatment, while TM decreased FSS since 4 weeks, continuously after treatment in 4 weeks. According to comparison with other groups assume that TM having efficacy reduce FSS better than other implements. Biochemistry results found that YH2 can reduce low-density lipoprotein (LDL) and blood urea nitrogen, while a TM can reduce triglyceride levels. CG showed a significant decrease in LDL and an increase in alanine transaminase and alkaline phosphatase. Originality/Value: Therefore, the demonstration could be concluded that Thai traditional therapies could be a choice for prehypertension patients to control their blood pressure in the early stages, for decrease of SBP, DBP, FSS, and PSS.
