Abstract

Background: The rapidly increasing aging population and urbanization may affect the sleep quality of the elderly. This study aimed to identify predictive factors of poor sleep quality among the elderly living in the urban areas of Lampang Province, Northern Thailand.

Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted among 220 elderly people in Mueang Lampang District, Lampang Province. The participants were interviewed using constructive questionnaires and the Thai version of the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI). Predictive factors were examined using multivariable logistic regression with a backward elimination process.

Results: Overall, 35.91% of the participants had poor sleep quality (PSQI >5). A multivariable logistic regression analysis indicated that stress (with an adjusted odds ratio of 3.25 and 95% confidence interval [1.17-9.06]), lack of exercise (2.02 [1.05-4.14]), using sleep medication the night before (2.55 [1.14-5.75]), >2 urination times during the night (2.11 [1.12-3.97]), having to endure external noise prior to entering the bedroom (2.72 [1.41-5.24]), using air conditioning (2.20 [1.09-4.42]) and sleeping on soft mattresses (6.77 [1.83-25.11]) were predictive factors of poor sleep quality among the elderly, with a significance of 78.07%.

Conclusion: The prevalence of poor sleep quality was moderate. To improve sleep quality among the elderly, proper stress management should be prioritized and promoted, optimizing the conditions within the bedroom should be considered as crucial, and the proper utilization of sleep medications should be ensured.
