Abstract

Background: Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is a condition where the body struggles to regulate blood sugar levels. The GCK (Glucose kinase) and GCKR (Glucokinase regulatory protein) genes play a crucial role in glucose metabolism. GCK produces an enzyme essential for glucose sensing and insulin production, while GCKR regulates this enzyme's activity.

Objective: The meta-analysis aimed to investigate GCK rs1799884 and GCKR rs780094 gene polymorphisms and their association with T2DM in an Asian population.

Methods: Researchers observed articles for two genetic variations (GCK rs1799884 and GCKR rs780094) and their link to type 2 diabetes. We searched online databases like Scopus and PubMed for studies comparing people with and without the disease. Metagenyo is a tool used to analyze the data and understand if these genetic variations truly raise the risk of developing T2DM.

Results: This study suggests that genetic variations of GCK are associated with a higher risk of T2DM, regardless of gene polymorphism in allelic, recessive, and dominant models. However, the analysis of GCKR rs780094 gene polymorphism and T2DM was associated only with the recessive model.

Conclusion: This study shows that GCK rs1799884 and GCKR rs780094 are strongly linked to a higher chance of getting T2DM in the Asian population.
