Abstract
The COVID-19 pandemic has underscored the importance of face mask usage as a preventive measure against viral transmission. Extensive studies have confirmed the efficacy of face masks in curtailing respiratory infections caused by viruses, including influenza and COVID-19. The significance of consistent face mask implementation over extended periods has become evident, particularly in high-risk environments such as healthcare facilities and public spaces. Despite their effectiveness, it is imperative to acknowledge the potential challenges and side effects that different populations may experience during prolonged mask usage. This comprehensive review examines the implications of face mask usage across diverse groups, encompassing healthy adults, older adults, children, healthcare workers, individuals engaged in exercise, and those with various medical conditions, such as respiratory, ear-nose-throat, eye, heart, neurodegenerative, and psychiatric disorders. By evaluating both the benefits and drawbacks of face mask usage for each group, this article aims to provide healthcare professionals with informed recommendations that optimize preventive efforts while ensuring the well-being of individuals. The adoption of appropriate mask types, regular breaks, and tailored communication strategies are vital for maintaining comfort and safety. Additionally, attention to hygiene, respiratory exercises, and adjustments in exercise intensity are crucial aspects for successful mask usage. Recognizing the unique needs of different populations in relation to face mask usage is essential for effective public health management during the ongoing pandemic.
