They were selected by Multi-stage Cluster Sampling to respond to a questionnaire. The questionnaire consisted of demographic data, Thai Mental State Examination (TMSE) and Thai Geriatric Depression Scale (TGDS). The data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, Chi-square, t-test, one-way ANOVA, Pearson’s product moment correlation coefficient and multiple linear regression analysis for explained demographic data, correlation and predictors of depression in elderly monks. Results : The prevalence of depression was 12.1. Among various demographic data including marital status before ordaination (single), presence of physically illness, income (more than 500 bath), being in consultation were correlated with depression at the 0.001 level; the age of ordination (less than 50 years old) was correlated with depression at the 0.01 level, the age (70 – 74 years old) and the number of years in the robe (phansa) more than 31 years; status in the monastery (Abbot) and received Buddhist monastic education (dhamma scholar advanced level) were correlated with depression at 0.05 level. Significant negative relationship was found between Thai Mental State Examination scores and depression (r = - 0.379) at the 0.01 level.
