Abstract

The situation regarding language use in external communication in the reign of King Rama III is examined by comparing the texts of the only foreign diplomatic mission to Rama II with the situation at the beginning of the reign of King Mongkut, taking into account intervening missions and other foreign records. In this period it is pointed out that there was a decisive shift away from the use of Portuguese or Malay to English and the factors behind this are considered, including Rama Ill's own attitude to change.
