Abstract

This article discusses the forms and textual functions of time adverbial clauses in Thai travelogue discourse. The time adverbial clauses are characterized by subordinating morphemes and word order. There are six functions of the time adverbial clauses. The first function is to maintain the journey perspective of the travelogue. The next function is to link paragraphs in prior-time, point coincidence, continuous-punctiliar overlap, and preview. They also report the climatic outcome of the paragraph and signal the storyline. Finally the time adverbial clauses are used for temporal setting.
