Abstract
This article delves into the key elements of Sino-Thai artist, Tang Chang’s life and identity, exploring their influence on his societal standing and artistic approach. Also known as Chang Sae-tang, he gained recognition for his unique position outside the mainstream. Focusing on his ethnicity, beliefs, status, and career, this study highlights how his Sino-Thai heritage shaped his artistic vision. It underscores Chang’s deep acknowledgement of his Sino-Thai heritage, noting how his Chinese identity permeates his thoughts and manifests in his works. This distinction, alongside other socio-cultural factors, arguably sets Chang apart from Silpakorn graduate artists, who were considered part of the mainstream group during that period. Through a detailed analysis of Chang’s artworks, writings and archival materials, this article aims to provide a comprehensive overview of his life while exploring how various aspects of his existence are mirrored in his artistic expression.
