Abstract

This article examines the vowel-length contrastbetween(e)and(ɛ)andbetween(o)and(ɔ)in the Thai language of the Sukhothai Period. Length distinctions are analyzed by assessing the connections between graphemes in Sukhothai inscriptionsand phonemes in Proto-Southwestern Tai and Angkorian Khmer. The study reveals that there are 5 graphemes representing (e),(ɛ),(o),and (ɔ), which are , , <-->, , and . The distribution of vocalic graphemes compared with vowel phonemes in PSWT demonstrates that vowel phonemes can be divided into two groups. Vowels in the first group include those with length contrast, such as /e/, /eː/and/o/, /oː/.On the other hand, vowels in the second group do not have length contrast; examples include /ɛː/and /ɔː/. Additionally, both /ɛː/and /ɔː/have allophones [ɛ]and[ɔ]that appear in specific environments.(บทความฉบับนี้มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อศึกษาความต่างที่มีนัยสำคัญด้านความสั้นยาว (length contrast) ของสระ(e) (ɛ) (o)และ(ɔ)ในภาษาไทยสมัยสุโขทัยจากการวิเคราะห์ระบบอักขระในจารึกสุโขทัยและปฏิภาคของหน่วยอักขระและหน่วยเสียงในภาษาไทยตะวันตกเฉียงใต้ดั้งเดิม (Proto-Southwestern Tai) ในกรณีคำร่วมเชื้อสาย และภาษาเขมรสมัยพระนคร (Angkorian Khmer)ในกรณีคำยืม ผลการศึกษาพบว่ามีหน่วยอักขระแทนเสียงสระ(e) (ɛ) (o)และ(ɔ)ทั้งสิ้น5 หน่วย<เ-> <แ-> <--> <โ-> และ<-อ> จากการวิเคราะห์การแจกแจงของหน่วยอักขระเทียบกับระบบเสียงในภาษาไทตะวันตกเฉียงใต้ดั้งเดิม พบว่าหน่วยเสียงสระภาษาไทยสมัยสุโขทัยนั้นสามารถแบ่งได้เป็น 2 กลุ่ม คือหน่วยเสียงสระที่มีความต่างที่มีนัยสำคัญด้านความสั้นยาว ได้แก่ หน่วยเสียงสระ/e/, /eː/และ/o/, /oː/และหน่วยเสียงสระที่ไม่มีความต่างที่มีนัยสำคัญด้านความสั้นยาว ได้แก่ หน่วยเสียงสระเดี่ยว/ɛː/และ/ɔː/ที่มีเสียงย่อย[ɛ]และ[ɔ]ที่ปรากฏในบริบทเฉพาะ)
