Abstract

This study attempted to fill a knowledge gap regarding experiences and perspectives of pre-elderly employees in a formal private- sector who underwent the work transition from a formal sector to an informal sector. A case study research method was conducted with 3 0 in- depth interviews of formal private-sector employees who have shifted to work in the informal sector after 45 years of age. The results can be divided into 3 main parts: Firstly, with regard to a change from a formal to an informal sector, home- based workers, domestic workers and agricultural workers are the most vulnerable groups that face difficulty in achieving the transition into the formal sector. Secondly, the determinants of a worker aged 45 and above to change from a formal sector to an informal sector consisted of more than one factor. The reasons include external factors (e.g. an economic crisis, and massive floods in 2011), and internal factors (e.g. stress during work, work- life unbalance, own health problems or other family member's health problems, desire for career advancement, and own desire to work independently) . Thirdly, factors that help to smooth transitions to a new job in the informal sector including having sufficient savings before withdrawing from the formal work sector, existing networking to help reduce the risk of being incomeless after withdrawing from a monthly wage of the formal work sector, having information, knowledge or skills related to the new business or new jobs to work in the informal sector. Such information and knowledge include the use of previous skills to apply in a new job in the informal sector.
