Abstract

A descriptive correlation design was employed in a cross-sectional study aimed at assessing the level of health literacy of older persons participating in senior clubs/ learning centers in Bangkok Metropolitan Region. The sample population comprised 400 elderly persons recruited by stratified random sampling from seven elderly clubs/learning centers. Data analysis was carried out by using descriptive statistics and multiple regression. The results showed that: (a) the health literacy level of the majority (69.3% ) of the older persons who participated in elderly clubs/learning centers was at a fair level but needed to be improved (17.8%) and only 13 percent were at a good level. For the dimensions of health literacy, it was found that health knowledge and disease prevention were at a good level (86% ); and media literacy, media accessibility and self-management skills needed to be improved at 52, 36 and 33.3 percent respectively; and (b) factors related to the health literacy of older persons were age and level of education. Age had a negative correlation with health literacy, but level of education had a positive correlation. Innovation and health literacy promotion for older persons participating in senior clubs/ learning centers in the Bangkok Metropolitan Region should be focused on the activities or interventions that are appropriate according to the level of health literacy of the older persons in consideration of their age and level of education.
