Abstract

Thailand has become an aging society. Therefore, it is necessary to acquire basic health information about senior citizens. The objective of this study was to analyze the quality of life and health needs of older persons. This study was conducted using a cross-sectional study design. As for the methods used, multi-stage random sampling was used to calculate the sample size and interviews. A total of 847 older persons were interviewed, most of whom (66.9%) were females at an average age of 69.3 years (standard deviation =7.1 years); almost half of them (46.4%) were married and 71 percent were unemployed, although a little more than a half (51.8%) had sufficient income but no savings. 6.1 per cent of the participants were in need of some degree of help. For quality of life aspects classification, the aspect with the highest mean was mental health. By contrast, the mean of physical functioning (PF) and bodily pain (BP) aspects were lower than the standard mean. The older person had various overall quality of life of scores as follows: most of them were in moderate condition, followed by good condition. From past literature reviews, it was found that, after organizing activities for older persons, their survival rate increased. Three out of four (74.6%) of the respondents thought that the presence of a health complex or a health center of the local community should be promoted.
