Abstract
Objective To compare total peroxidase activity in whole saliva between periodontitis patients and perio- dontal healthy control by using more reliable and specific assay of 5-thio-2-nitrobenzoic acid (Nbs). Materials and methods Unstimulated whole saliva samples from periodontitis patients and periodontal healthy subjects (n = 15) were collected by expectoration. Flow rate was determined and pH was measured by pH paper. Total protein concentration and peroxidase activity were determined by Coomassie Brilliant Blue G250 and Nbs, respectively. Results and conclusions Mean values of flow rate, pH and total protein concentration in both groups were similar to each other. However, total peroxidase activity obtained from the periodontitis patients was statistically higher than that from the control (p<0.05).
