Abstract

Background : Stress and stress management behavior are important mental health problems and were mostly caused by work or professional problems. It was found that the complicated and too wide framed character of work and responsibility caused the man power shortage problem in the border patrol police company which further led to their stress and stress management behavior. However, there was no data about stress, stress management behavior and the related factors in border patrol police company, so the researcher was interested in studying them. Objective : To study stress, stress management behavior and related factors of stress and stress management behaviors in border patrol police company 446 in Narathiwat Province. Design : A cross – sectional descriptive study. Setting : Border patrol police company 446 in Narathiwat Province Materials and Methods : Two hundred and sixty – nine border patrol police officers from border patrol police company 446 in Narathiwat Province. The instruments were demographic data questionnaire, the social support questionnaire, personality test (The Maudsley Personality Inventory), mental health indicator questionnaire (The General Well- being Schedule) and stress management behavior questionnaire. Results : This study found that 54.4% of 269 subjects from border patrol police Company 446 in Narathiwat Province, mean age 30.74 years old, had medium level of stress. The related factors which could be statistically significant stress prognosis ( P < .05) were the characters of personality (Scale N), low social support, low educational level, physical health problems, family and personal income. Most of the border patrol police officers - in the Company 446, Narathiwat Province had the stress management behavior of medium level or 36.4 %, the related factors and the statistical significant stress management behavior prognosis (P < .05) were family income, native habitat, personal income, sufficiency of income, social support and character of personality (Scale E). Conclusion : As the results, it was found that most of the border patrol police officers in Company 446, Narathiwat Province had the medium stress level and the medium level stress management behavior. Besides there were many related factors which are personal, family and social , economic and professional factors.
