Abstract

การศึกษาเรื่อง ผู้หญิงกับความอ้วน: เรือนร่างของผู้หญิงกับการประกอบสร้างอัตลักษณ์ในนวนิยายชิคลิตนี้ ผู้เขียนได้วิเคราะห์เปรียบเทียบตัวละครหญิงอ้วนจากนวนิยายชิคลิตที่มีตัวละครเอกเป็นผู้หญิงอ้วนได้แก่ Conversations With the Fat Girl (2005) ของ ลิซ่า พาล์มเมอร์ (Liza Palmer) | How to Cook a Tart (2002) ของ นิน่า คิลแฮม (Nina Killham), Size 12 is Not Fat (2006) ของ แมค คาบ็อท (Meg Cabot) และ I’m Not the New Me (2005) ของ เวนดี้ แมคคลัวร์ (Wendy McClure) เพื่อดูว่าบริบททางสังคมและวัฒนธรรมมีบทบาทในการนำเสนอภาพตัวละครหญิงอ้วน จากการศึกษาพบว่าสังคมบริโภคนิยมที่ให้นิยามความหมายของความอ้วนในแง่ลบนั้นไม่ได้ส่งผลกระทบต่อตัวละครหญิงอ้วนเท่านั้น หากยังส่งผลกระทบต่อตัวละครหญิงทั้งหมดในสังคม นวนิยายชิคลิตนำเสนอภาพของตัวละครหญิงอ้วนที่ต้องเผชิญกับปัญหาชีวิตทั้งในเรื่องอาชีพการงานและความรักอันเนื่องมาจากความอ้วนของตนเอง สะท้อนมายาคติความงามของสังคมที่มองว่าความอ้วนนำไปสู่ความล้มเหลวในชีวิต แต่ในขณะเดียวกันก็นำเสนอภาพของตัวละครหญิงอ้วนกลุ่มหนึ่งที่ไม่ยอมจำนนต่อกรอบข้อกำหนดของสังคม ท้าทายกับการตีตราความอ้วนในแง่ลบ อีกทั้งพยายามต่อรองกับสังคมแห่งมายาคติโดยการสร้างนิยามความหมายให้กับตนเอง ทว่า ในแง่หนึ่งนวนิยายชิคลิตก็เป็นการสร้างค่านิยมรูปแบบใหม่หรือกลุ่มวัฒนธรรมย่อย โดยให้ผู้หญิงอ้วนได้รับบทบาทเป็นตัวเอก ทั้งนี้เพื่อทัดทานกับวัฒนธรรมและค่านิยมกระแสหลัก และตอบโจทย์ให้กับเหล่าบรรดานักอ่านกลุ่มใหญ่ที่เป็นผู้หญิงอ้วนในสังคม

Women and Fatness: Female Body and the Construction of Identity in Chick-Lit aims to compare and analyze the fat female characters in Liza Palmer’s Conversations With the Fat Girl (2005), Nina Killham’s How to Cook a Tart (2002), Meg Cabot’s Size 12 is Not Fat (2006) and Wendy McClure’s I’m Not the New Me (2005) to see how society and culture affect the representations of fat female characters. The study shows that the consumer society that delivers the negative perspectives for fatness not only affects the fat female characters but also all female characters. The fat female characters who suffer from hardship in career and love’s life represented in Chick Lit reflect the beauty myth which believes that fatness entitles women to the unsuccessful lives. However, chick lit also represents the fat heroines who are non-conformists, challenge the negative judgments of fatness given by the society, and negotiate identity by reconstituting their self-definition. Nevertheless, the study shows that chick lit is a mode of subculture which creates the new trend of fat heroines who rebel against the mainstream beliefs to attract more readers.
