Abstract

วิทยานิพนธ์ฉบับนี้ศึกษาองค์ความรู้และสร้างคำอธิบายทางประวัติศาสตร์ของการประกวดศิลปกรรมในประเทศไทย ตั้งแต่ทศวรรษ 2480 เมื่อผู้อุปถัมภ์การประกวดศิลปกรรมเปลี่ยนจากพระมหากษัตริย์และชนชั้นนำมาเป็นภาครัฐ จนกระทั่งการประกวดศิลปกรรมรุ่งเรืองสูงสุดในทศวรรษ 2530 เพื่อศึกษาปัจจัยทางการเมืองและเศรษฐกิจที่สัมพันธ์กับการประกวดศิลปกรรม รวมถึงการสร้างรูปแบบและเนื้อหาของงานศิลปะ ตลอดจนการอุปถัมภ์ศิลปะของรัฐและเอกชน ซึ่งก่อให้เกิดผลกระทบในเชิงพัฒนาการหรือปัญหาแก่วงการศิลปะสมัยใหม่ของไทย วิทยานิพนธ์นี้เสนอว่านอกจากแนวความคิด จินตนาการ เสรีภาพ และความเป็นปัจเจกของศิลปินแล้ว การประกวดศิลปกรรมยังมีส่วนในการสร้างศิลปะสมัยใหม่และร่วมสมัยของไทย การประกวดศิลปกรรมสะท้อนปฏิสัมพันธ์ระหว่างกลุ่มบุคคลในสังคมและในวงการศิลปะ อาทิ ชนชั้นนำ ผู้นำรัฐบาล เจ้าหน้าที่รัฐ นักการเมือง นักธุรกิจ ศิลปิน และปัญญาชน บุคคลเหล่านี้มีส่วนสำคัญต่อการอุปถัมภ์การสร้างสรรค์ การกำกับชี้นำ การวิจารณ์ และการเผยแพร่ ภายใต้ปัจจัยทางการเมืองและเศรษฐกิจในแต่ละช่วงเวลา การประกวดศิลปกรรมยังเป็นพื้นที่ทางศิลปะอีกชนิดหนึ่งที่เอื้อประโยชน์หลายด้านต่อศิลปินและวงการศิลปะ อาทิ การอุปถัมภ์ศิลปะของรัฐและเอกชน การพัฒนาหลักสูตรและสถาบันการศึกษาให้มีความก้าวหน้า การพัฒนาและผลักดันแนวงานศิลปะ การพัฒนาหอศิลป์ การกระตุ้นให้เกิดการวิจารณ์ศิลปะ ตลอดจนเป็นพื้นที่แสวงหาโอกาสและชื่อเสียง มีผลต่อการเพิ่มมูลค่าของผลงานในตลาดการค้างานศิลปะ อย่างไรก็ตาม การประกวดไม่ได้รับการยอมรับจากคนในวงกว้างอย่างจริงจัง เนื่องจากไม่สามารถพัฒนาก้าวพ้นไปจากรูปแบบหรือประเพณีดั้งเดิมที่ดำเนินสืบต่อมาอย่างยาวนาน ทั้งยังไม่มีการแก้ไขปัญหาที่สั่งสม โดยเฉพาะปัญหาการผูกขาดคณะกรรมการตัดสิน

Other Abstract (Other language abstract of ETD)

This thesis examines existing body of knowledge about art competitions and creates a new historical narrative of art competitions in Thailand from the late 1930s, when the patrons of these competitions changed from kings and members of the elites to the government sector, to its most flourishing period between the late 1980s and mid-1990s. The thesis studies the political and economic factors, the creation of art forms and contents, and the patronage of art by government and private sectors, all of which affected the development modern art in Thailand. The thesis argues that it was not only artists’ concepts, imagination, freedom, and individualism but also art competitions that created modern and contemporary Thai art. These competitions reflected the interactions among social groups such as members of the elites, leading figures in the government, government officials, politicians, businessmen, artists, and intellectuals. These figures together with political and economic factors in different time periods were all significant to the patronage, creation, supervision, guidance, criticism, and propagation of art competitions. Art competitions also provided space that yielded benefits to the artists and the art realm in many ways, namely government and private sectors’ patronage of the arts and the development of curriculums and educational institutions, art works, and art galleries. They were also a place for opportunities and fame which added value to works of art in the art market. However, art competitions have not been widely accepted because they could not transcend their long-standing form and tradition. Moreover, accumulated problems, especially the monopoly of the judging committee, have not been solved.
