Abstract

In this research, there are three objectives related including 1) to understand each stage of a news selection process 2) to understand factors needed in ITV's news selection process 3) to measure the probability that news will be selected. To arrive at the conclusion, the researcher collected data using various methods i.e. observation, interview, and questionnaire. The research results show that 1. ITV's news selection process will be done by the news editor group, program director, and daily news editor sitting in the meetings. The meetings are divided in to two periods, morning and afternoon. The decision making can be done in two forms which are disjoined incremental and problem solving depended on the situation in each period. 2. Factors affecting the selection can be divided into internal and external factors. The internal factors are ITV's policies, program schedules, the news editor group, daily news editor, and program director. The external factors include a value and a priority of the news. 3. The probability of the selection depends on the news editor’s attitude toward the news’ value which can be varied from one situation to another. Moreover, the media structure cannot influence the news selection process since news is a core product of the channel.
