Abstract
This special research aims to study the translation of wordplays in Win Lyovarin’s novels Poomruk Paansingha Part I: Kaattakum Glang Talay, Part II: Kadee Phee Nang Takien and Part III: Kaattakum Jukkrarasri from Thai to English. Various approaches have been used for analyzing the source text and solving the translation problems. Theories and approaches that have been applied to this research include Christiane Nord’s Discourse Analysis, Reiss and Vermeer’s Skopostheorie, Jean Delisle’s Interpretive Approach, Dirk Delabastita’s wordplay translation approach and Thorsten Schroter’s Language-Play functions and quality assessment approach. The research shows that these approaches work as an efficient guideline for the translation. As the wordplays in this research are intended to be funny, keeping the same effects in the target wordplays is the key when deciding the most appropriate equivalence.
