Abstract

Fear of cancer recurrence was among the strongest challenges encountered by cancer patients and survivors. However, there were very limited studies in Thailand that examined the factors that predicted this psychological construct. Therefore, the current research examined the possible associations and predictive roles that illness perception, psychological resilience, and age had with fear of cancer recurrence. The participants were 134 Thai cancer patients and survivors who responded to a set of questionnaires that measured these factors. Study invitations were circulated via social media platforms commonly frequented by cancer patients or survivors (e.g., cancer support groups). The Pearson correlation coefficient and multiple regression analyses were performed. The findings suggested significant positive and negative associations that illness perception and psychological resilience had with fear of cancer recurrence. However, the association between age and fear of cancer recurrence was not significant. Altogether, the three factors significantly predicted fear of cancer recurrence and accounted for 57% of its variance. However, when examined together, only illness perception significantly predicted fear of cancer recurrence. Implications for therapeutic prevention and treatment of fear of cancer recurrence were described.
