Abstract
The progress of sustainability in sports mega-events have been more prominent than ever due to its substantial impact on society, the economy, and the environment. The Olympic Games’ immense magnitude has sparked apprehensions regarding their ecological and societal ramifications—increased energy usage and waste, transportation demands, new infrastructural constructions—which all have significant impacts on the environment and carbon emissions. Because of this, the IOC, host cities, and related sports authorities are constantly evolving and seeking innovative solutions towards sustainability while overcoming challenges faced. Given the importance of sustainable development in sports, this study examines sustainable approaches and solutions adopted by the IOC and host cities during this past decade, while identifying key challenges faced by the host city towards sustainability planning and implementation. Data were collected from qualitative interviews and an extensive literature review and analysis on the subject matter. Four qualified experts from the IOC and other related sporting bodies were selected to help the author gather meaningful insights for the study. After the findings were transcribed and analysed, it was found that all participants stressed the importance of continued implementation of sustainability as a priority in the Olympics and other sporting events. More importantly, the organising committees must invest in sustainability initiatives and continue to seek innovative strategies to help minimise carbon emissions and the environmental footprints. All parties must also work collaboratively to overcome stakeholder alignment and cost barriers while providing education and awareness on sustainability to the wider public.
