Abstract

This scoping review explores the integration of music and legacy interventions within palliative care settings. Legacy interventions, defined as methods focusing on creating personal memorabilia such as books, recordings, or storytelling, allow patients to express emotions and leave a legacy, thereby strengthening bonds with their loved ones. The review aimed to identify the types of music interventions used for conducting legacy work and to understand the experiences and perspectives of patients, families, caregivers, and healthcare providers. A systematic search of electronic databases yielded 14 studies meeting the inclusion criteria. The findings indicate the utilization of various music-based legacy interventions in palliative care, including heartbeat songs, digital legacy projects, songwriting, and song of life. These interventions were found to provide comfort, relaxation, meaningful memories, continuation of bonds, hope, emotional expression, and social/spiritual support for patients and their loved ones. The experiences described across the studies highlight the valuable role of music in assisting patients and families in creating lasting legacies and coping with end-of-life challenges. Implications for future practice and research include the need for further exploration of music-based legacy work, examination of long-term outcomes, and integration of these approaches into comprehensive palliative care. Overall, this scoping review underscores the therapeutic potential of incorporating music into legacy interventions to enhance the quality of life and well-being for palliative care patients and their families.
