Abstract

Mothers of babies in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) often experience various emotional and physical challenges due to the stress from watching their beloved infants suffer and recovering from childbirth. Consequently, they are also considered one of the primary recipients of care, not only because they themselves are recovering but also because a mother's well-being can impact the well-being of NICU infant. Music therapy is recognized as a valuable service that can effectively to support maternal well-being. Some studies have explored the impact of music therapy on NICU mothers, there remains a need for a comprehensive review in this area. Such a review can map out currently available research and provide an overview of various approaches to best inform current practice. Therefore, this scoping review aims to investigate and collate existing studies on the use of music therapy interventions for NICU mothers. The purpose is to analyze objectives, methodologies, techniques, musical, and interventional components that were implemented to address various therapeutic goals for this population. For this review, the researcher conducted online searches of four electronic databases and performed a hand-search of five music therapy journals. A total of 13 studies met the inclusion criteria and were selected for analysis. The studies were published between 2011 to 2023 and were conducted in various geographical locations. The studies employed diverse music therapy intervention methods, with more frequent use of recreative, compositional and receptive techniques. Studies provided interventions to participants comprised of mothers with infants together, mothers only, and all together including fathers, in that order of frequency. The primary goal of therapy focused on the emotional, physical, and social aspects. In conclusion, this review summarized the current scope of research, emphasizing the specific aspects of music therapy interventions for NICU mothers. It also provided recommendations for future research to address the gaps and enhance the comprehensiveness of research in this area.
