Abstract

Various transitions occur in one’s lifetime, shifting life from one phase to another. Pregnancy and childbirth stand out as significant milestones for women. These periods bring forth demands across various dimensions: physical, mental, emotional, relational, and spiritual, which need ample support for a smooth transition into motherhood. However, pregnant women and new mothers often face heightened risks of stress, anxiety, and perinatal depression. Music intervention has emerged as a promising avenue for alleviating depressive symptoms in this demographic, with numerous studies highlighting its efficacy. In this scoping review, the aim was to delve into existing literature and identify the characteristics of music therapy intervention for preventing and improving depressive symptoms during pregnancy up to a year postpartum, focusing on the intervention goals and methods. The review identified 309 articles from diverse databases and five music therapy journals, ultimately including 13 that met the inclusion criteria. Across the reviewed literature, the most cited intervention goal areas, in descending order, were emotional, mental, relational, physical, combined physical and emotional, and holistic goal areas. Notably, interventions like infant-directed singing and songwriting emerged as prevalent in music therapy for the prevention and improvement of perinatal depressive symptoms. This review illuminates these findings and extends recommendations for further research and practical implementation. The hope is to broaden the scope of support available to pregnant women and new mothers, facilitating smoother transitions into their new roles.
