Abstract
"ลายสือ" (Lai-Sue, pronounced phonetically as [lʌɪsɯː])is a specific termthatoriginated inthe era of Sukhothai. "ลายสือ" (Lai-Sue) was initially foundin the Ramkhamhaeng inscription. In this paper, Chinese documentation was analyzed to investigate the origin of "ลายสือ" (Lai-Sue) and its definitionunder theframework of etymology. The resultsshowthat the coinage of "ลายสือ" (Lai-Sue)was influenced by the southern Chinese dialects ofthe Sui - Song Dynasties, and the northern Thai dialects in the era of Sukhothai. The analytic findings identify that "ลายสือ" (Lai-Sue) was combined from two lexical units. One was "ลาย" (Lai),which was translated from "文". Theother unit was "สือ" (Sue),which was transliterated from "書". Thesetwo Chinese lexical units had the same meaning as "a letter". The meaning of these two original words was duplicate. That is to say, "ลายสือ" (Lai-Sue)was coined throughthe process of reduplication.(คำว่า "ลายสือ" เป็นคำที่ใช้เฉพาะในสมัยสุโขทัย มีปรากฏในหลักศิลาจารึกพ่อขุนรามคำแหง บทความฉบับนี้ผู้เขียนขอเสนอแนวคิดเกี่ยวกับที่มา ความหมาย การสร้างคำ โดยใช้เอกสารจีนเป็นข้อมูลประกอบในการศึกษา โดยวิเคราะห์ตามหลักทฤษฎีศัพทมูลวิทยา(Etymology)ผลการวิจัยพบว่า คำว่า "ลาย" ใช้วิธีการแปลความหมายมาจากคำว่า"文"แปลว่ํา "ตัวหนังสือ"ส่วนคำว่า "สือ" ใช้วิธีการทับศัพท์มาจากคำว่า"書" แปลว่า "ตัวหนังสือ"เป็นการรับเอาคำเหล่านี้มาจากภาษาจีนโบราณยุคกลาง (สุย - ซ่ง) ซึ่งยึดตามการออกเสียงภาษาถิ่นทางภาคใต้ของจีนและทางภาคเหนือของไทยในสมัยสุโขทัย มีวิธีการสร้างคำแบบแปลความหมายกับทับศัพท์ในรูปแบบของคำซ้อนความหมาย)
