Abstract
During the period from 1914-1919 while Egypt was under British colonial rule Egyptians, especially women, led a traditional way of life. Egyptian author Naguib Mahfouz portrays Egyptian women as being deeply committed to their religious faith and the roles of homemaker, wife, and offering advice to their husbands. Yet, apart from these images, the Egyptian women played a significant role in politics during the people's revolution in 1919. Egyptian literature presents them as supportive mothers and wives who provide counsel and courage to their husbands and children. Moreover, the women were also bravely actively marching in the streets alongside men. The invasion from foreign armed forces and the social conditions of the time contributed to a patriotic and nationalistic image of women. This article aims to analyse the representations of Egyptian women in Naguib Mahfouz's The Cairo Trilogy: Palace Walk with regard to domestic, social, and political roles and responsibilities. It shows that the author portrays Egyptian women as conventional in their faith and norms but also politically active in the Egyptian Revolution of 1919 almost to the same extent as men. (ในช่วงปีคศ.1914-1919 สังคมอียิปต์เผชิญกับการตกเป็นอาณานิคมของอังกฤษวิถีชีวิตของคนอียิปต์โดยเฉพาะอย่างยิ่งสตรีอียิปต์ยังคงยึดถือแนวทางการดาเนินชีวิตแบบจารีตประเพณีดั้งเดิม นะญีบ มะห์ฟูซ นักประพันธ์ชาวอียิปต์แสดงให้เห็นว่าสตรีอียิปต์นอกจากยึดมั่นในหลักแห่งความศรัทธาอย่างเคร่งครัด เป็นแม่บ้าน ภรรยา และที่ปรึกษาสามี สตรีอียิปต์ยังมีบทบาทสาคัญทางด้านการเมืองในการปฏิวัติประชาชน ค.ศ.1919 และถูกกล่าวขานในวรรณกรรมอียิปต์ในฐานะมารดาและภรรยาที่ให้การสนับสนุนอยู่เบื้องหลัง คอยให้คาปรึกษาและให้กาลังใจสามีและลูกๆ อีกทั้งร่วมออกมาเคลื่อนไหวเดินขบวนบนท้องถนนเคียงบ่าเคียงไหล่ผู้ชายอย่างกล้าหาญ การรุกรานของกองกาลังต่างชาติและสภาพบ้านเมืองในยามนั้นทาให้ภาพลักษณ์ของสตรีอยู่บนพื้นฐานของ ความรักชาติ บทความวิจัยฉบับนี้มีวัตถุประสงค์เพื่อวิเคราะห์สตรีอียิปต์ในนวนิยายของนะญีบ มะห์ฟูซชุด The Cairo Trilogy ภาคแรก (Palace Walk) ในด้านบทบาทและหน้าที่ทาง ด้านครอบครัว สังคม การเมืองและพบว่าผู้ประพันธ์ได้แสดงให้เห็นอัตลักษณ์ความเป็นสตรีอียิปต์ที่ยึดมั่นในหลักศรัทธาและจารีตดั้งเดิม และบทบาทสตรีที่เกือบทัดเทียมบุรุษในการออกมาต่อสู้ทางการเมืองในการปฏิวัติ ค.ศ.1919)
