Abstract
Twelve fluoride mouthwash formulas which passed the preservative effectiveness test were studied for their physical and chemical stability by accelerating test under heat at 30° c, 40° c and 50° c for four weeks, The viscosity, precipitation, odor, color, taste, pH, and fluoride ion in each formula were recorded once a week. It was found that heat did not change the fluoride ion concentration, but the viscosity and pH of the products incubated at 50° c significantly decreased after one week (p < 0.05). It was concluded that all these 12 formulas were not physically stable at 50° c but they could be made stable by addition of buffering agent such as phosphate buffer with pH adjustment to 6-7.
