Abstract

Titanium has been used for dental and medical applications for more than 20 years. It is well-known for its high degree of biocompatibility, its strength and its corrosion resistance. At present, titanium is widely used for dental implant. A long-term follow up shows that there is no toxicological side effect from the implant. To improve the physical and mechanical properties of pure titanium, it is mixed with aluminium and vanadium in a certain concentration. The alloy composed of 90% titanium, 6% aluminium and 4% vanadium (Ti-6Al-4V) is an excellent implant material. It is light, strong and highly resistant to fatigue and corrosion. This paper presents the basic properties of titanium and its alloy. It is our view that although Ti-6Al-4V alloy is popular for human implantation, the clinical study of its effect is still controversial. A dentist needs to understand thoroughly about titanium and its alloy before one performs any implantation with them so that the patients could receive the most benefit. (ไทเทเนียม เป็นธาตุที่รู้จักและถูกนำมาใช้ในวงการแพทย์มานานกว่า 20 ปี เนื่องจากมีคุณสมบัติ ที่เหมาะสมหลายประการ คือ มีระดับไบโอคอมแพทบิลิตี (biocompatibility) สูง มีความแข็งแรง ความทนทาน ต่อการสึกกร่อน ปัจจุบันโลหะไทเทเนียมนำมาใช้ในงานทันตกรรมรากเทียมกันอย่างแพร่หลาย การติดตาม ผลในระยะยาวไม่พบอันตรายใด ๆ ที่เกิดจากการฝังโลหะไทเทเนียมในร่างกาย ต่อมามีการเสริมคุณสมบัติ ของไทเทเนียมโดยการผสมกับโลหะชนิดอื่น ๆ เช่น อลูมิเนียม วานาเดียม ในความเข้มข้นต่าง ๆ เพื่อให้ได้ คุณสมบัติทางฟิสิกส์และกลศาสตร์ที่ต้องการ เช่น น้ำหนักเบา แข็งแรง และมีความทนทานต่อความล้าและ การสึกกร่อน โลหะผสมที่นิยมมากที่สุด ได้แก่ Ti-6Al-4V โลหะผสมชนิดนี้แม้ว่าจะได้รับการตรวจสอบแล้วว่า มีความปลอดภัย แต่การศึกษาถึงผลที่มีต่อร่างกายในระยะยาวมีจำกัด ทันตแพทย์ควรมีความรู้ และความ เข้าใจเกี่ยวกับคุณสมบัติพื้นฐานของโลหะอย่างถ่องแท้ก่อนการเลือกใช้ เพื่อให้เกิดประโยชน์สูงสุดแก่ผู้ป่วย)
